What Are the Most Common Drain Clog Issues in Chicago?

Most drain problems fall under a couple of categories, but they eventually lead to clogs, blockages, and overflowing. If you need drain cleaning in Chicago, it is likely for one of these common drain clog issues that we see most often.

Pipe Corrosion

There are two main reasons that residents in Chicago see pipe corrosion. The first is due to water hardness that can be as high as 150 PPM. The hardness refers to the amount of dissolved solids or minerals in the water. As these minerals wash through your lines, they coat the pipe with residue that builds up over time. Eventually, the line will begin to narrow, and chunks of mineral debris will dislodge and break, taking pieces of the pipe with it. Pipe erosion can be terrible if your pipes are made of lead.

The second likely reason for pipe corrosion is using corrosive chemicals to clean your sinks, showers, tubs, and toilets. The worst products you can use are the ones “designed” to clear clogged drains. These wear out the inner lining of the pipe, causing more damage. The most effective way to remove clogs is with professional drain cleaning in Chicago.

Bad Smells

If you walk into your home after a long day at work or after a vacation and smell something foul, it could be your pipes. In some cases, lines that have not been used in a while will give off a methane-like odor. To fix this, try pouring water down the drain. If the smell goes away, the problem was an empty P-trap. The P-trap is a U-shaped pipe under your sinks. It should have water sitting in it to prevent sewer gas from seeping in. If the water is evaporated from lack of use, you will smell it.

If flushing water does not eliminate the bad smell, you will need drain cleaning. A foul odor could indicate bacteria growth or a main sewer line blockage. Either way, the problem can be unhealthy, so you shouldn’t ignore it.

Pipe Clogs

Clogs are one of the more common drain issues we see in Chicago. Clogs and blockages can happen anywhere through your plumbing system, and they can be due to several different factors. Here are the more likely causes of clogged drains.

  • Foreign objects – If you need drain cleaning in Chicago, it may be due to a foreign object. Things fall in sinks and shower drains often, and they can cause your pipes to clog. Using a drain catcher can help with this problem.
  • Oils and fats – You should never pour oils, fats, and grease down the drain. These will harden once they have been cooled, causing the line to clog. If this is your problem, we will likely need to use hydro jetting to blast the inner pipes clean.
  • Hard water – As mentioned earlier, hard water can damage the inside of your pipes. There are ways that you can prevent this. The first is to get regular drain cleaning to remove residue before it can get thick. The second is to install a water softener to filter out the minerals.
  • Biofilm – This type of buildup takes years to grow out of hand. Biofilm is the bacteria that comes from food, people, and pets. Over time, the bacteria grows thicker and can cause slower draining and bad smells. The bacteria should be dealt with to avoid E. coli, salmonella, and other harmful germs.
  • Hair and soap – As we wash our hair, we lose a lot of strands. These hairs go down the drain, where they get tangled up with other hair and soap residue. After a while, they turn into matted balls that can block the flow of water. Drain cleaning can fix this problem.
  • Damaged sewer line – If all the drains in your home become stopped up and won’t drain efficiently, you may have a problem with your main sewer line. If the problem is with your sewer line, it will require investigation and drain cleaning. If left unchecked, you could have a sewer backup problem which can make people very sick and cause a lot of damage.

Slow Draining

If you are standing in six inches of water while taking a shower, you have a slow drain problem. A slow drain can be caused by something simple like a hair clog that needs to be snaked out. Or, it could be due to something more invasive, like tree roots that penetrated through your sewer line. If this is the case, we can usually use hydro jetting to blast the roots and restore water flow.

If your home is older than 40 years, then there is a risk of a partial or complete sewer line collapse. If this is the problem, it could get pretty expensive. We will go over some ways that the City of Chicago may help with this problem.

Overflowing Toilets

What could be worse than an overflowing toilet? How about one that keeps overflowing? Toilets overflow when there is a blockage or hard water limescale built up in the pipes. For this reason, it is recommended by the EPA that only toilet paper is flushed. Bathroom tissue is made to break down in your plumbing system. Everything else is not. Here’s a list of stuff you should never flush down the toilet.

  • Flushable wipes – Wipes will not break down, causing clogs.
  • Dental floss – Floss gets snagged on hard mineral deposits in the pipes, causing more debris to catch and build up.
  • Feminine hygiene products – These don’t break down. They just create big plumbing clogs.
  • Condoms – They will eventually get snagged on something and create a blockage, overflowing the toilet.
  • Diapers – If your toddler takes their diaper off and puts it in the toilet, you will need to fish it out. Diapers equal blockages.
  • Cotton swabs – If you drop cotton swabs down the sink drain, they will cause clogs.
  • Cigarette butts – Some people empty their ashtrays into their toilets. Cigarette butts are not flushable.
  • Cat litter – Litter is made of clay, and it can act like cement in your pipes. Throw the scoops in the trash.
  • Paper towels – Toilet paper is made for toilets. Paper towels are not.
  • Oil and Grease – You should not pour grease and oil down the drain. Let it cool and scrape it into the trash.

How Much Does Drain Cleaning Usually Cost in Chicago?

If you need drain cleaning in Chicago, you probably want to know how much it will cost. The cost is a tricky subject because each job is slightly different, and the price will depend on a few cost factors. We can tell you that most drain cleanings range on average from about $115 to $1,010. Below we will go over some of the factors that will influence your bill. If you need an exact quote, we can help.

Drain Cleaning

If all you need is a simple drain cleaning in Chicago, it won’t cost too much. The average price is between $115 and $530, based on past work. Getting your drain cleaned is an excellent way to prevent pipe buildup and clogs because regular cleaning will ensure your water and wastewater flow out effectively.

Clog Removal

If you need drain cleaning in Chicago because of a clog, you may pay a little more depending on how bad it is. The average cost for snaking toilets and drains is about $125 to $550. However, if we need to use hydro jetting to get through the problem, it will be closer to $125 to $885.

Drain Repair

Sometimes, you will need sewer line drain cleaning in Chicago to get your water flowing again. Sewer line drain cleaning can cost between $250 and $1,010. This is more likely to be the case if you have roots in your pipe.

Does the City of Chicago Provide Any Assistance for Clogged Drains?

If drain cleaning in Chicago leads to discovering a main sewer line that we can’t clear, the City may help. In this case, if the break is part of the public way, the Department of Water Maintenance will repair the private drain line, saving you $5,000 to $10,000. It all depends on where the blockage or break is, and the city inspector will need to see that the line cannot be snaked open. If the break is on private property, the homeowner will be responsible.

The City of Chicago will help homeowners replace main lines that are made of lead. Their program will allow you to apply for a fee waiver which can save upwards of $3,000. However, you will still need to pay for the repair, labor, and materials.

Do Certain Water Contaminants in Chicago Cause Drain Clogs?

The primary water contaminant that residents of Chicago need to think about is lead. About 70% of the city and private water lines are made of lead. Over time, corrosion of the pipes from chemicals and hard water minerals breaks down the pipes, dispersing more lead into the drinking water.

The City of Chicago is working to replace the lead pipes, encouraging homeowners to do the same. If this is a concern for you, you can have your water tested. If it comes back positive for lead, you can install whole home water filtration designed to remove it.

Who Is the Water Utility Company in Chicago?

The Department of Water Management delivers a billion gallons of water every day to residents of Chicago. If you have a problem with your water or the city lines leading to or away from your property, they are responsible for them. If the problem is on your property, you will be responsible for fixing it unless you can prove that the blockage is in the public right-of-way.

If your drain problem is on your property, we can help find the best solution. We have experience dealing with standing shower water, overflowing toilets, and other drain problems. We can fix most issues with drain cleaning in Chicago.
