What Are the Most Common Plumbing Issues in Huntington Beach?

Welcome to Surf City! This little piece of paradise has inspired timeless hits such as “Surf City,” “Surfin’ Safari,” and “Surfer Joe.” It’s the perfect place for more extreme sports like SUP, BMX, and kayaking.

While surfing and swimming is the obvious appeal for many residents of Huntington Beach, many residents love the beautiful beaches, fine dining, and laid back atmosphere. More relaxing activities include golf, horseback riding, and volleyball. Huntington Beach is also used for filming, so you may see your favorite local haunt in a movie.

With that being said, all this warm weather and large bodies of water can lead to issues with your plumbing. The most common plumbing issues in Huntington Beach include:

  • Hard water
  • Rotten egg smell
  • Cloudy or colored water
  • Flooding due to storm water
  • Water shortage

How Does the Water in Huntington Beach Affect Your Plumbing?

Standing Water

One of the problems in Huntington Beach is standing water from floods. This isn’t a common issue, however. In fact, the last historical flood dates all the way back to 1825, and the last flood to cause any significant damage was on February 24, 1998.

With that being said, Huntington Beach is still a coastal city, and takes the threat of floods very seriously. Some of the steps taken to prevent flooding includes:

  • Installing and maintaining runoff water pump stations, storm pipes, and catch basins
  • Warning residents of potential flood
  • Encouraging residents to get flood insurance

So how does this affect your plumbing? The short answer is that heavy flood waters can damage your foundation. It can cause the foundation to shift, which in turn can damage your pipes.

Water Shortage

Water shortage is another one of those potential problems that the City of Huntington Beach is taking steps to prevent before it becomes an issue. California has an arid climate, after all, so water conservation is something that can’t be ignored. With that being said, Huntington Beach gets water from two sources.

The major source of water in Huntington Beach is groundwater. In fact, about three-quarters of the water running through your pipes comes from right here in Huntington Beach. The other quarter is imported from Northern California and the Colorado River.

There are a few rules you’ll need to abide by in order to help conserve water for everyone. These include:

  • Only use automatic irrigation between the hours of 6 p.m. to 9 a.m.
  • Keep your watering under 10 minutes
  • Wait at least 48 hours to irrigate after a rainfall
  • Don’t wash down hard surfaces such as sidewalks and driveways
  • Avoid runoff while watering
  • Only use a hose that has a shut-off nozzle when washing cars, trucks, boats, trailers, and recreational vehicles
  • Don’t use a fountain or decorative water feature.

This can affect your pipes by not using them enough. Like a car that sits out in the driveway, pipes that don’t get used tend to go bad. Believe it or not, this can lead to a sewage smell. This happens because a P trap is used to keep drains from releasing sewer gas into your residence. When there is no water in the P trap, the gas can leak through. Running water through the pipes at least once a week can prevent this.

Hard Water

Other water problems such as hard water are due to the minerals in your water. The levels aren’t considered high enough to be dangerous, but if you don’t like the taste, a water filter will help clean up the flavor. Our plumbers can help install a water filter system if this is something you are interested in. The major problem with hard water is that it can lead to clogging and damage in your pipes that may cost you money later on down the line if not addressed.

Cloudy Water

Sometimes your water may look a little cloudy when you turn on the faucet. The water can look milky, white, hazy, soapy, or even foamy. If you see this, there’s really no reason to feel alarmed. It’s a result of air in the water supply. If you’re still not sure, fill up a clear glass with water. Set it on the counter, and observe it for two minutes. If the problem is air in the lines, then it will start to clear up at the bottom first, and then work its way to the top until the water is completely clear again. If the water remains cloudy, then it might be time to call us for professional help.

How Much Does Plumbing Usually Cost in Huntington Beach?

It’s hard to estimate how much it will cost to fix a plumbing issue until our plumber actually shows up to see how much damage you’re looking at. The cost can range anywhere from $125 up to around $700 or more. There are a variety of factors that will affect the cost.

Severity of damage

If you’re looking at a simple leak, then it shouldn’t cost too much to fix. If it’s something more complex, like pipes that must be dug up, then the price will increase accordingly.

Materials

Most plumbing jobs will probably require that our plumber get materials, unless it’s a very basic job. In many cases, our expert will already have the materials on hand, like wrenches, plungers, and snakes. There are other times when they will need to order the parts. If it’s something they can run down to the local hardware store and get, the cost won’t be as high as if they have to order it. The price rises even further if there is a shortage of materials, which does happen.

Permits

If you have to get a permit for repairs, it will cost you some extra money. The City of Huntington Beach reports that you’ll pay $32 up front for a processing charge. It’s an extra $39 minimum for an inspection fee, and this price can quickly rise to $262 for certain projects. The plumbing plan review is a minimum of $65.

Can Better Plumbing Save You Money in Huntington Beach?

Maintenance goes a long way towards helping keep cost down later on down the line. A few quick minutes with our plumber can keep them from coming back to your house for months at a time.

Inspections

Having our plumber come through and take a quick look at your pipes is one of the surest ways to catch small problems before they become big ones. This is especially important with water heaters. You can also perform your own inspections for the pipes you can easily get to.

Check the Water Pressure

Water pressure is simply how much force is coming out of your faucet and showerhead. You can purchase a pressure gauge for about $10. To use a water pressure gauge, turn off all the water in the house. This includes washing machines, dishwashers, and refrigerators with ice makers. Locate a spigot outside, and thread the water gauge onto it. Then turn the water on full blast. The ideal pressure should read between 40 to 50 psi. It should not be higher than 60 psi. If it is, contact us right away.

When Should You Call the Water Utility Company in Huntington Beach vs Hire a Plumber?

There’s a time to call us and a time to call the Huntington Beach Emergency Water Service. Knowing which situations require the Emergency Water Service will save you a lot of time playing phone tag. If you notice water leaks, damaged fire hydrants, or have quality concerns about your water, call the Emergency Water Service at (714)-536-5921. For anything else, call our master plumbers.

Water Leaks

Have you ever tried to lower your water bill, but it continues to rise even though you are using less water? If that’s the case, you may have a water leak somewhere. It can be a little tricky trying to decide who to call. It really depends on if the water leak is from your house pipe or if it’s connected to the city’s pipelines.

One way to figure out if you need to call us is to turn your water meter off. This is usually located outside near the curb in front of your home. It should be in a concrete box marked with “water.” If it’s still running after shutting it off, the leak is in your pipes. If it’s not, then the leak may be on the city’s side.

Another way to know if you need to call our plumbers is if you notice standing water. If it’s between the water meter and your home, then you need to call us. If it’s on the far side of the meter, call the Huntington Beach Emergency Water Supply.

Damaged Fire Hydrants

There are some things we can’t fix and a damaged fire hydrant is one of them. Call the Emergency Water Service as soon as possible for repairs.

Quality Concerns

If your water is tasting a little off or there’s an unpleasant smell that seems to be coming from your water supply, call the Huntington Beach Emergency Water Service. While we can help diagnose the problem, it’s up to the city of Huntington Beach to actually address it.

When Do You Need Permits for Plumbing Service in Huntington Beach?

There are a few occasions when you need a permit for any type of plumbing services. According to the City of Huntington Beach, you’ll need a permit for the following:

  • Installation, removal, alteration, or replacement of any plumbing fixture
  • Gas, water, or drainage piping work
  • Water heating equipment

There are a few exceptions to these rules, and these includes:

  • Stopping of leaks in drains, water, soil, waste, or vent pipe
  • Clearing of stoppages or the repairing of leaks in pipes, valves, or fixtures, and the removal and reinstallation of water closets
  • Repair or replacement of any plumbing fixture or appliance of the same type and size and in the same location
  • Replacement of any part that does not alter its approval or make it unsafe

If any of the parts must be replaced with new parts or need to be rearranged, then you may need to call and make sure this doesn’t count as a new installation. If that’s the case, then you’ll need a permit.

While all this may seem confusing, our professional plumbers will know all the ins and outs, and will be able to help figure out whether you need a permit before they begin working.
