What Are the Most Common Plumbing Issues in Jefferson City?

Welcome to Jefferson City, the capital of Missouri. It’s affectionately known as Jeff City by its many residents and is filled with history. You can take a tour of the Missouri State Penitentiary, which was founded in 1836. It housed notorious criminals such as Charles “Pretty Boy” Floyd and James Earl Ray.

The Jefferson Landing State Historic Site is the perfect way to experience life like it was during the 1850s. You can visit the general store and warehouse, before heading for a hike on the Katy Trail. The downtown area is home to more historical sites.

While there are many wonderful things to do in Jefferson City, there are a few problems with the plumbing that will require you to call a plumber from time to time. Most of the issues aren’t that big of a problem if caught early, however.

Sewer Lines

Sewers aren’t something we give much thought to. Until it starts to back up, of course. There are several reasons why the sewer lines in Jefferson City might have some issues, such as gunk build up and tree roots. There are lots of lovely trees growing in and around Jefferson City, and it’s not always easy to know where the roots are going to grow next. It’s not uncommon for roots to puncture the sewer lining. This can cause several problems that only a trained plumber can fix.

Backflow

Jefferson City is prone to heavy rainfall, and sometimes the water simply has no place to go. It takes time for it to absorb into the ground, and this often means it’s sitting in your yard. During this time, the use of indoor plumbing will be limited due to the water being held back from the backflow preventer.

The City CSM helps out with the backflow, however, you can call a plumber to install a backflow preventer. You’ll have to pay for this out of pocket, but Jefferson City will reimburse you up to $500 after the plumber submits the bill to the city.

Running toilets

This may not seem like that big of a deal. If the water keeps running in the toilet, a simple jiggle of the handle will often fix the problem. That is if you notice and catch it. A toilet that continues to run will also continue to raise your water bill. It can also be a bit of a water hog. According to Leak Alert, a running toilet can waste up to 4.5 gallons a minute. That’s nearly 300 gallons per hour. To put it another way, it’s wasting up to 6,480 gallons per day and it can raise your water bill significantly.

Leaks

A leaky faucet is enough to drive anyone mad when you’re trying to get some sleep. It’s even worse when you get your water bill and realize how much money it’s costing you. Some leaks are obvious, and easy enough to fix, while others can be more difficult to find, and will increase the cost of repairing it. Even so, fixing the problem before it turns into a major one will save you money in the long run.

How Does the Water in Jefferson City Affect Your Plumbing?

The water in Jefferson City is considered moderately hard. According to Hydro-Flow, it’s 132 PPM (mg/L) or 8 gpg. Hard water might sound like a bad thing, but it really depends on how you look at it. It’s simply the build up of minerals such as calcium and magnesium in your water.

This isn’t a bad thing for human consumption, according to the WHO. For most people, getting the recommended amount of minerals we need isn’t the easiest thing to do. Drinking it in your water is a great way to meet the daily recommendation.

The catch is that hard water isn’t so great for your plumbing. It can lead to build up, which in turn leads to leaks and busted pipes, and increases your water pressure. It also reduces the effectiveness of soaps and detergents.

Signs that you have hard water aren’t that hard to spot. Simply add a few clear glasses to your dishwasher load. When you pull it out, if the glass looks cloudy or like there is a white film inside, you have a hard water problem. Adding a water softener can greatly help with the problem. It will reduce the mineral concentration in your water, and save your pipes.

How Much Does Plumbing Usually Cost in Jefferson City?

Plumbing in Jefferson City is surprisingly cheap. It has a price range of $91 to $660.00. On average, you can expect to pay about $326 per job. The price will depend on several factors, such as how old the existing pipes are, how big the job is, and the price of materials.

Aging Pipes

Cities that are filled with history are beautiful to look at and are often protected. The pipes begin to show their age by degrading, however, it’s easy to ignore this since you typically don’t see your pipes unless you’re looking for them. Pipes manufactured prior to 1986 had lead in them, which is very harmful to your health. Such pipes should be removed and replaced with new pipes. This will greatly increase the price of work.

Size of the Job

Repairing a leaky faucet isn’t going to cost that much. The plumber likely already has all the tools on hand, can easily diagnose the problem, and get to work. Finding a leaky pipe that’s located behind a wall is another story, and will require a greater deal of work. This may require removing part of the wall, which means the price of the plumbing job will increase. You’ll also be responsible for getting the wall patched up and repainted once it’s completed, so that’s more money. The same applies to work that involves digging up pipes.

Materials

Some jobs are fairly straightforward and don’t require any extra parts. For other jobs, it may mean a trip to the local hardware store. If the parts aren’t there, then they’ll have to be ordered. This will increase your final price.

Another factor to consider when figuring out the price of materials is what parts you’ll need. A faucet will cost a lot less money than a new septic system. Copper is also more expensive than PVC or PEX piping.

Can Better Plumbing Save You Money in Jefferson City?

Better plumbing is always a good idea if you want to save money. One way to do so is to remove your aging pipes and replace them. It will cost you upfront, but it’ll save you money in the long run.

Replacing the piping is a great way to entice buyers to take a look at your home, and it will increase the resale value of your home. Even if you want to keep your home’s historical charm, there are some areas that just need to go, and aging pipes are one of them.

Replacing aging pipes also helps with your health. Lead in your water can cause health problems, especially for children. According to the CDC, there should not be zero lead in your drinking water. It can cause major health problems for children. The EPA reports that it can lead to behavior and learning problems, lower IQ and hyperactivity, slowed growth, hearing problems, and anemia. In pregnant women, it can cause premature labor and reduced growth of the fetus.

According to the WHO, lead can also be found in PVC pipes, so this is something you need to take into consideration before changing out your piping. You don’t want to change out one problem, only to replace it with the same thing, after all.

When Should You Call the Water Utility Company in Jefferson City vs Hire a Plumber?

In most cases, you’ll need to hire a plumber. The exceptions to this are when you have a sewer back up problem, a stormwater problem, need to request a sewer location, or have a question regarding backwater valve information.

If there is a sewer back up, this is something you obviously want to be taken care of as soon as possible. You can call the City Collection Systems Maintenance Office at (573) 634-6455 during regular business hours. If it’s after business hours, call the Jefferson City Police Department at (573) 634-6351.

Jefferson City recommends you call the city first if you notice that water is backing up slowly or rapidly in your basement or drain, and you aren’t using any water. There’s a strong possibility that there is a blockage in the main city line. If this is the case, then Jefferson City will come out and inspect the line. Should there be an issue, Jefferson City will address it, and you don’t have to worry about it. If Jefferson City doesn’t find a blockage, however, you can give us a call, and we’ll come to check it out.

Another instance when you should call Jefferson City first is if you notice a drain backing up while you’re using it. If this is the case, turn the water off and see if the water stops coming in. If it does, you should give us a call.

When Do You Need Permits for Plumbing Service in Jefferson City?

Before beginning any major plumbing repairs, it’s recommended that you call the Jefferson City Buildings Registration Division at (573) 634-6410 for more information as to whether you need a permit or not. There are a few exceptions to getting a permit that includes stopping leaks. The rule of thumb is that if you need to replace a part, this is considered new work, and you will likely need to get a permit. The same applies to rearranging pipes, cutting into walls, or digging up the soil.

With that being said, Jefferson City understands that emergencies are going to happen. If you have a pipe burst in the middle of the night, and we replace the part, you aren’t going to get in trouble for having the work done before you got the permit. You’ll still need to fill out a permit application during the next business day, however, or you could face fines. A permit application costs a minimum of $25. This can increase depending on the job.
